In our typical week long early June trip, staying on the west side (NLRO or Parkpoint), there is usually a day or two where the wind is creating so many big waves we don’t go out, or, have to wait until after 6pm, if at all. Last year we braved a day where the wind from N/NE created waves so big the trolling motor was coming out of the water as we tried to drag Lindy’s. Not a good situation. Thinking a safer/better approach to get some fishing time in would be to get behind an island on the leeward side. Not really sure if there is a fishing strategy or what type of structure we should be looking for that might produce some action on the leeward side? What do you think? Thanks.

Getting out of the wind
Getting out of the wind
Wind is almost always a factor for a day or two, and our weather rolls in fast. The saving grace is the hundreds for islands on this system, and while some resorts are a bit more exposed you can access the back channel or safe passage in most conditions. Fishing to me is a joy no matter what, but often if you are on the backside or leeward side of an island think of digging into your tackle box...try lures and a more active presentation...think about the wind and that is blowing food into concentrated areas, so there maybe fish but like not huge numbers. Moving baits may create the action needed to spark interest. If you trailer your boat...try putting in at ash river- either fish the river and waterfall for a day or fish Namakan. I’ve found the proximity of the islands is generally closer and the wind and wave is never as extreme
Thanks Wade! Appreciate you sharing some knowledge. Any guess at when ice out will be this year? Also, in various online reports I have noticed ice fisherman pulling up some nice size Northerns! Do you think the general size of Northerns is increasing on Kab during the soft water season? We have been coming up for about 10 years in JUne and mostly target walleye.
