I love fishing! Kabetogama is my setting on most fishing trips, but I love flyfishing, ocean fishing and I would say all fishing. Help me by adding your thoughts, pictures, and information. Thanks...this is an on-going process!
It is cold today! Really cold here in Minnesota...25-35 below zero...yes -30 below! Makes me think of our winter escape the last few years. Islamorada...a key in beautiful Florida Keys! I didn't think Florida would capture me...and I don't think I'm sold completely, BUT escaping winter for the Florida Keys and specifically this little gem of a town (or Key) call Islamorada is a must to be in this category. Many people will talk about "Key West" but to me that is a town based on its social setting, drinking, food, and entertainment...Islamorada is a smaller, sleepy Key that has amazing restaurants, fun family sites and activities, and the hub of fishing in the Florida Keys. IF you're headed that directions I can share a few place to stay or eat...so wonderful (and a lot warmer than winter in Minnesota)
Oh Montana you keep calling me back...It's a combination of the scenery, the solitude, and the art of presenting a "fly" to a fish that I find amazing. I have long loved fly fishing and fly tying. Growing up fishing on the Brule river in northern Wisconsin was my introduction. A small, beautiful twisting river that has open slower water areas, and some swift moving deeper water. I know I'm not a great fly fisherman, but I'm hooked and if I have time...sneaking away on my own or with my oldest son, we have discovered several area's in Montana that make our family vacations, a fishing paradise for the two of us...Rock Creek near Missoula. The Gallatin river outside of Bozeman, the Smith River outside of White Sulfer Springs, and finally a funny fishing mecca The Bighorn river have all been mind blowing fishing stops for our trips. Not always because of the fish, but the adventure to get there and the beauty that the river or lake brought us...
Yep some other good spots in the states you mentioned above. I'm in Jupiter, FL so know all of the keys pretty well. Anyway, heading up to Lake Kab for the firs time later on this year. Thoughts on whether we should go first week of July or second week of August. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm sure others have different views, but here's mine. Personally I know everyone likes to be at the lake on 4th of July...I would say that week is one of the busiest of the summer. And although there resorts are full, campsites are full, and busy is not city lakes busy...but there are people up here. Not all are fisherman, so it's not like spots are full of people...
As far as fishing...waters are warm, temps are nice, great weather in general and fish have moved into summer patterns on top of mid-lake reefs and structures. Bass and northern bite is good and aggressive. Walleyes are hit or miss and crappie are ghosts...

PS- we got back from Islamorada about 2 weeks ago...great weather and good fishing. Typically we fish on the everglades side or inland waters!
Thanks for the info! Also didn’t know if my question was on the best board for response.... fresh mangrove snapper and seeing a bull dolphin break the surface are truly incredible experiences. have You had a chance to bass fish at Lake O?
Regardless we are looking forward getting up there for some relaxation and hopefully some tight lines!
